A functional brace (sometimes referred to as a twin block) is used for children and adolescents whose jaws are still developing. It comes in two separate parts, one for the upper teeth and one for the lower. When worn together, these two blocks guide the lower jaw forward, encouraging improved growth and bite.
Unlike traditional braces, that mainly move teeth, twin block braces can change the position of both teeth and jaw – helping to bring the bottom jaw and teeth closer to your top teeth. Typically, they are recommended between the ages of eight and 14, when children and adolescents are still growing. They’re usually followed by fixed braces for best results.
Functional braces are most commonly used to correct the upper jaw and teeth that stick out too far compared to the lower jaw. This can happen if the lower jaw is underdeveloped. The appliance helps by gently training the lower jaw to sit in a more forward position.

Functional brace treatment can take between nine and 12 months, depending on growth, cooperation, and the complexity of the bite problem. After this treatment has been completed, fixed braces or clear aligners might be recommended to straighten any teeth that aren’t completely aligned.
